AI transparency
In Vettika, the interview is scripted, AI drafts questions and scores transcripts, and people make every decision; no independent bias audit has been done yet.
What AI does
AI does three jobs:
- Drafts interview questions for the hiring team to review and edit.
- Turns the candidate's speech into text, and the scripted questions into speech.
- Scores the transcript against the hiring team's rubric, and picks quotes to support the score.
What AI doesn't do
AI doesn't:
- Make hiring decisions. People at the company make every decision.
- Reject or advance anyone.
- Invent or change questions during the interview.
- Watch video. There isn't any.
- Score from a recording. We don't keep one, and the score comes from the transcript alone.
The interview is scripted
The voice asks the questions the hiring team set, in order. It isn't having a free conversation. Every candidate for an interview gets the same questions.
The model
Drafting and scoring use Google Gemini. Speech-to-text and text-to-speech run through LiveKit's inference service, using Deepgram and Cartesia.
Not enough evidence
If a candidate says too little, or a rubric line has no real answer behind it, we don't turn that into a low score. The report says there isn't enough evidence to assess them.
Quote checking
Each quote the model offers is checked against what the candidate actually said. A quote we can't find in one of their answers is removed from the report.
This stops invented quotes from reaching the report. It doesn't prove a score is right, and a score stays even if its quotes are removed.
Known limits
Read the transcript, not just the score. These are the limits we know about:
- Speech-to-text makes mistakes. Accents and background noise can make them more likely, and a misheard word then affects the score.
- A score can be wrong, even when the transcript is right.
- The model can misread an answer, or weigh one point too heavily.
- A rubric is only as fair as the person who wrote it.
Bias audit
No independent bias audit of Vettika has been done yet. We can't tell you how scores differ across groups of candidates.
New York City: Local Law 144
If you hire in New York City, check Local Law 144 before you use the service.
The law covers automated employment decision tools that substantially assist or replace discretionary decision-making. It applies to employers and employment agencies, and the duty sits with them rather than the vendor. Where it applies, a tool can be used only if it had a bias audit by an independent auditor within the year before use, information about the audit is public, and candidates got the required notices, which the city says means 10 business days before use.
Because no audit has been done, you can't rely on Vettika for one. Get your own advice on whether the law covers your use.
European Union: the AI Act
The EU AI Act lists AI systems intended for the recruitment or selection of people as high-risk, in Annex III, point 4(a). That includes filtering applications and evaluating candidates.
If you use the service in the EU, you are a deployer, which means someone using an AI system under their authority. Deployers have their own duties under Article 26. They include:
- Using the system according to its instructions.
- Giving human oversight to people with the right competence, training and authority.
- Making sure input data you control is relevant and sufficiently representative.
- Monitoring how the system works, and keeping the logs under your control.
- Informing workers and their representatives where the system is used at work.
- Telling people that a high-risk system is being used in decisions about them.
When the EU rules apply
Regulation (EU) 2026/1744 set the date that these high-risk rules apply to Annex III systems at 2 December 2027. Other parts of the AI Act apply on other dates. Get your own advice on what applies to you and when.
Asking for a human review
Candidates can ask the hiring company for a human review. The company makes the decision, so it's the right place to ask. If you don't know who to contact, email us and we'll pass your request on.
Other places
Other countries, states and cities have their own rules on AI in hiring. This page isn't a full list and it isn't legal advice. Get your own advice before you use Vettika.
